Most retail traders use Fibonacci at the 38.2% or 50% levels. They buy just because a line was hit. But as an ICT trader, you know the market is more sophisticated than that.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to use Fibonacci in forex the institutional way. We’ll cover the "Optimal Trade Entry" (OTE) and the critical concept of "Premium vs Discount." These tools will help you enter trades at the best possible price, with the lowest possible risk.

1. What is Premium vs Discount?

Before you even look for an entry, you need to know where price is in relation to its current range.

  • Discount: The bottom 50% of a range. Institutions want to buy here.
  • Premium: The top 50% of a range. Institutions want to sell here.

You should never look for a buy setup in a Premium zone, and never look for a sell setup in a Discount zone. This simple rule will save you from hundreds of bad trades.

2. The ICT Fibonacci Settings

To follow our methodology, you need to update your TradingView Fibonacci tool with these levels:

  • 0 (Start of move)
  • 1 (End of move)
  • 0.5 (Equilibrium - The line between Premium and Discount)
  • 0.618
  • 0.705 (The OTE Sweet Spot)
  • 0.79

3. What is the Optimal Trade Entry (OTE)?

The OTE is the "Golden Zone" between the 62% and 79% retracement levels. This is where the highest probability of a trend continuation exists. It’s where smart money is most likely to add to their positions or enter new ones after a Market Structure Shift.

4. How to Find the OTE

  1. Identify a clear expansion move that breaks market structure.
  2. Draw your Fib tool from the swing low to the swing high (for an uptrend).
  3. Wait for price to pull back into the 0.618 - 0.79 range.
  4. Look for a Fair Value Gap or Order Block within that zone to confirm your entry.

Conclusion

Learning how to use Fibonacci in forex isn't about predicting the future; it's about finding the highest probability zone for your trade. By combining Fib OTE with the concept of Premium vs Discount, you become a much more patient and profitable trader.

FAQ

Q: Do I always have to wait for the 62%? A: In very strong trends, price might only hit the 50% (Equilibrium). However, the 61.8 - 79% zone offers much better Risk-to-Reward.

Q: Does this work on all timeframes? A: Yes, Fibonacci is fractal. The same OTE levels that work on the Daily chart will work on the 1-minute chart.

Q: Which level is the most important? A: We consider the 0.705 level to be the "center" of the OTE and the most powerful entry point.

Q: Can I use Fibonacci alone? A: No. It should always be used as a confluence—a reason to enter that is supported by Market Structure and Liquidity.
